Saharawi president urges France to play a role in the Western Sahara peace
According to a communiqué released by the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Western Sahara, the Sahrawi president, Mohammed Abdelaziz has sent, on the 11th of this month, a letter to the president of The Republic of France, François Hollande, in which he underlines the role and the contribution of France in the adoption of resolutions 658 (in 1990) and 690 (in 1991) which have given rise to the creation of the Minurso, whose main goal is the organization and the supervision of a referendum for auto-determination in Western Sahara.
In this same document, the Sahrawi president calls the French government to pressure the Moroccan government so that it honours its commitments and it recognises the right of the Sahrawi people to auto-determination. The Sahrawi president has also urged the French government to do everything in its power within the Security Council, to provide the Minurso with protection and supervision of human rights.
This request follows in the wake of several organizations such as Amnesty International or Human Right Watch. Finally, the Sahrawi president continues in his letter to the president of France declaring that because of Morocco’s intransigence and its many failures in the peace process, France, member of the Security Council, responsible for peace and security in the world, can and must play a decisive role in the fair and sustainable solution to the conflict in Western Sahara. He also declares that the Polisario Front is ready to loyally cooperate with the United Nations for the application of these resolutions.
