URGENT: SAHARAWI PRISONERS NEED CIVIL OBSERVERS

CARTEL FINAL

URGENT: SAHARAWI PRISONERS NEED CIVIL OBSERVERS

The group of Saharawi civil citizens on trial since February 8 in Rabat had to appear illegally before a Moroccan military tribunal, is urgently demanding civil and international observers and the media to attend the court sessions in Rabat, Morocco.

FLASHBACK:

Gdeim Izik was a camp city set up some 15 kilometres from the occupied city of El Aaiún or Laayoune (capital of Western Sahara) and was the most numerous peaceful demonstration recorded in Saharawi history. More than 20,000 citizens had left their homes to construct the tent city right in the desert. They sent a message to the world they would no longer dare living under Moroccan occupation on their own Western Sahara land.

That camp was violently dismantled on November 8, 2010 by Moroccan police and soldiers, watched by the United Nations and the international community. And the camp organizers, a group of Saharawi civil citizens still cannot enjoy liberty and keep suffering from torture.

Accusations:

The prosecution is represented by the King’s Public Prosecutor.

The accused have been charged with the following criminal acts:

A) to form part of an armed gang;

B) to have used violence against representatives of the public order carrying out their functions;

C) to have caused the death of Moroccan agents by using violence, in the case of twelve of the accused;

D) desecration of a dead body, in the case of two of the accused;

E) threatening Morocco’s internal security.

PRESENT SITUATION:

On February 8, at least 31 international observers were present at the illegal court hearing affecting the so-called Gdeim Izik group, with no less than 18 of them still present in Rabat.

Considering it necessary to have everyone prepared to accompany both the prisoners and their family members to attend as CIVIL/INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS, we would like them to travel to Rabat, for these court hearings. Thus we ask them to contact us in order to put them in touch with the prisoners’ families and coordinate their trip and stay with the Saharawi citizens mentioned.

“BE A CIVIL OBSERVER AT THE ILLEGAL TRIAL AGAINST SAHARAWI PRISONERS IN RABAT!”

This is the very moment to show the Gdeim Izik political prisoners and their family members our support, as the court hearings will go on for another couple of days. Without international observers attending, the Moroccan regime would have to judge with no objections and without witnesses in this case.
