The European Union supports the modernisation of the Moroccan fisheries sector, and has done so in particular since the signing in 2006 of the Fisheries Partnership Agreement. The implementation of European support, through the Plan Halieutis (already 96% committed as of the end of October 2013) has focussed on boosting the competitiveness of the sector and the sustainability of stock.

The new Protocol will improve living standards for all populations at which it is aimed, by continuing the modernisation of infrastructure at the ports on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.

The new Protocol highlights the sustainable nature of the Moroccan fisheries policy. As such, it is fully in line with the Common Fisheries Policy as redefined recently.
It is for these reasons that the Fisheries, Development and Budget committees have recommended the approval of this new Protocol which responds to the demands set out by the European Parliament in December 2011
