Morocco-Israel $48m arms deal for Western Sahara | Porunsaharalibre | @x1saharalibre
PUSL.- According to recent news in several international media based on the French website Intelligence Online, Morocco bought three Israeli reconnaissance drones which arrived on January 26th and are part of a 48 million USD arms deal.
The drones will be deployed buy Morocco “to counter extremist groups and fight rebel movements in the Western Sahara”, as we can read in the report.
In Western Sahara there are no Rebel mouvements though which raises alarming questions. Western Sahara is partly occupied buy Morocco who invaded the territory in 1975 and constructed the longest separation wall in the world (2720km). A war broke out between Polisario Front (the legitimate representative of the Saharawi People) and the Moroccan invader but in 1991 a cease fire agreement was reached under the auspicies of the African Union and the United Nations.
A referendum for self determination was the basis of the cease fire agreement and should take place one to two years later.
Morocco, however, has never maintained its share of the agreement and, to date, no referendum has taken place. The Polisario Front never violated the ceasefire agreement.
The escalation of armaments and the dispatch of more weapons into the occupied territories is alarming. The Saharawi population in the occupied territories lives under a regime of terror and economic, political and social segregation, where there is neither freedom of speech nor movement or association and where all voices against the occupation are immediately silenced. This reinforcement of war material at a time when the action of the United Nations in the territory is to maintain the status quo, is yet another kindling of the fire of the extreme discontent of the Saharawi people with the international community. The cease-fire is increasingly threatened both by Morocco, which violates it daily and by the Saharawi population, who cannot continue to accept these violations.
Lior Ben Dor, the Israeli ministry of foreign affairs’ Arabic spokesperson, called this week for greater trade ties between the two stated and stated: “Welcome Moroccan people. I would love to tell you we invite investors, businessmen, researchers and Moroccan doctors to Israel.”
Morocco has long been accused of normalising relations with Israel and supporting Trump’s deal of the century in exchange for their support in the illegal occupation of Western Sahara.
This ties are not in agreement with Moroccos citizens views who largely condemns Israels action. The Moroccan Government arrested last October the head of the Moroccan Observatory against Normalisation with Israel, Ahmed Wehman, after he organised a protest against improving ties with the occupation state.
