PUSL.- UNITED NATIONS – The UN’s internal supervisory body published in a report (https://undocs.org/en/A/74/305(PartII) on UN peace operations that the number of fraud cases it has decided to investigate last year has increased by almost 80% compared to 2018, while the number of cases of sexual exploitation and abuse has increased by 40%.
The 2019 report by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services, which circulated last Friday, discloses that the largest number of cases investigated occurred in the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic, followed by peace maintenance operations in Mali, Congo, Western Sahara and South Sudan.
According to the report, of the 249 investigations, 44 cases involved the peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic, 36 in Mali, 35 in Congo, 33 in Western Sahara and 30 in South Sudan, sixteen related to the UN political mission in Afghanistan and another 55 involved 18 other peacekeeping operations.
In Western Sahara, investigations included conduct prohibited by an official and a military observer and medical insurance fraud by a UN official.
