A Rabat military court on Saturday (February 9th) asserted jurisdiction in the case of the Sahrawis accused of killing 8 Moroccan security officers, MAP reported. The court dismissed the defence request for a civilian trial.
The 24 defendants charged for the Western Sahara crime are accused of committing "violence against the security forces leading to deaths and the mutilation of corpses".
The case dates back to November 2010, when violent clashes erupted near Laayoune.
Fighting began when Moroccan troops dismantled the Gdaim Izik tent camp, where more than 20,000 Sahrawis had gathered to protest Morocco's social policy in Western Sahara.
